Friday, September 13, 2019

(CASSOPOLIS) – The man arrested for shooting another man outside of a Dowagiac bar has plead guilty to second degree murder.

Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz says 25 year old Rolandis Russell entered the plea on Tuesday. Russell admitted that on July 29, 2018 he left the Beeson Street Bar in Dowagiac at 2:30 AM and walked to his SUV where he took out a loaded AK-47. Russell says he shot 13 times at an person he had been arguing with, and inadvertently shot and killed 42 year old Fabian Wesaw of Dowagiac.

Russell also said he ran from the scene but was located and arrested by the Dowagiac Police Department a short time later.

With the plea agreement, Fitz says charges of first degree murder, assault with intent to murder, carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle and four felony firearm counts were dismissed.

Fitz says Russell will be sentenced to a minimum of 43 years. Under Michigan's Truth In Sentencing Law, Russell won't be eligible for parole until he actually serves 43 years.

He will officially be sentenced on October 25.
