April Unemployment Numbers Up Around NE Indiana

(INDIANAPOLIS) – Unemployment numbers went up across Northeast Indiana during the month of April, and experts say it's due to the coronavirus.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says LaGrange County's unemployment rate went from 2.4 percent in March to 28.8 percent in April. That's an increase of 26.4 percent.

The largest jump in the area was in Elkhart County, which went from 2.7 to 29.3 percent, which is a 26.6 percent increase.

Noble County went up 25.7 percent, going from an even 3 percent in March to 28.7 percent in April. Steuben County saw an increase of 17.2 percent. They went from 2.4 percent in March to 19.8 percent in April. DeKalb County saw their jobless rate increase from 2.8 percent in March to 21.7 percent in April. That's increase of 18.9 percent.

Statewide, Indiana's unemployment rate went from 3 percent to 16.9 percent. That's higher than the U.S. rate, which is at 14.7 percent in April, up from 4.7 percent in March.

State officials say job losses were widespread across all industry sectors around Indiana.

The highest unemployment rate in Indiana was in Howard County at 34.1 percent. The lowest was Daviess County at 8.4 percent.
