(STURGIS) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer's latest Executive Order is creating a lot of questions. Two of them are, who will enforce it and how will it be enforced?
Executive Order 2020-147 requires individuals to wear masks whenever they are in an indoor public space in Michigan, or in crowded outdoor spaces. It also requires any business that is open to the public to refuse entry or service to people who refuse to wear a face covering, with limited exceptions. A willful violation of the order is a misdemeanor, subject to a $500 criminal penalty.
Monday afternoon, the Sturgis Police Department issued a release on how they will handle the enforcement of this Executive Order. Director of Public Safety Geoffrey Smith shares what they tried to convey to businesses and to the public regarding how they will enforce this Executive Order. LINKC.
Smith says individuals can contact the Michigan Attorney General via the Governor's Constituent Services Office at 517-335-7858.
Smith says if stores and businesses have issues with customers who are not following the Executive Order and are being denied service, and are creating a problem, the Sturgis Police will come and handle the complaint.
