Sheriff's Department Gives Citizen Life Saving Award
Tuesday, July 14, 2020

(CENTREVILLE) – A Nottawa Township man has been given the 2020 Citizen Life Saving Award.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite presented the award to Mr. Danny Madden, after he helped out during an incident involving a teenager and a lawn mower.

On May 25, a 14 year old Sturgis boy was mowing a steep embankment along the St. Joseph River in the 23,000 block of River Road in Nottawa Township. The lawn mower overturned, impaling the teen on the roll bar under the machine. Madden was one of the first people to arrive and assist the victim's father. Madden applied pressure to the teen's wound with a towel until first responders arrived. Madden also allowed emergency vehicles to drive through his yard to stage the landing area for West Michigan Air Care.

In addition, Madden offered bottled water to the first responders.

The teen was flown from the scene to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Lillywhite says Mr. Madden's actions truly went above and beyond to assist the teen and his father, along with rescue personnel.
