(MENDON) – The Mendon football program is looking at a move to 8 man football for 2021.
During Monday's Mendon Board of Education Meeting, Athletic Director Glen Samson and Varsity football coach Bobby Kretschman shared with the Board that with numbers down at all levels, 8 man football is the way to go for the sustainability of the program.
Kretschman says 8 man football is not a new concept for some of the Mendon teams. LINKC.
Mendon Superintendent Leasa Griffith says the low numbers aren't just an issue for football. Girls basketball is also seeing fewer players along with other sports.
Samson says if Mendon decides to make this move, it should be decided soon so they can start putting schedules together. Samson also says if Mendon does go 8 man, they would like to form a league with other schools from the Southwest 10 who have also moved to 8 man football. LINKD.
The Board told Samson to start the process of moving to 8 man football and to keep them updated.
