Sturgis Police To Hold Citizen Police Academy

(STURGIS) – If you have always wanted to know more about how the Sturgis Police Department works, you will have a chance in 2019.

A Sturgis Citizens Police Academy will be held to educate the public about the Sturgis Police Department, along with the daily duties and training of the officers. 25 individuals will be accepted for the course. Students must be at least 18 years old and not have any serious criminal record, and must either live or work in the Sturgis area.

Sturgis Police officers will manage and host the Citizens Police Academy, under the direction of Sergeant Damon Knapp. Over the ten weeks the class will be meeting, students will get to learn about road patrol duties; SCAN drug investigations and drug recognition; detective and criminal investigations; and crime scene investigation among other topics.

Students will also be required to ride with an officer for six hours to get a good sense of a typical night patrol.

The classes will be Wednesday evenings from 6 until 8:30 PM from February 6 through April 10. To apply for the Citizens Police Academy, you can stop by the Sturgis Police Department to get an application or go online. LINKA.

All completed applications must be dropped off at the Sturgis Police Department by January 16.
