Sinking Fund Tips Shared With School Board

(STURGIS) – The Sturgis Board Of Education got a quick update Monday during their study session in preparation for the building and site sinking fund election.

Sturgis Superintendent Dr. Art Ebert (EE-bert) reminded the Board that the election will be Tuesday, May 7. The School District is presenting a request for 1.75 mills for 10 years. If it passes, the money from the building and site sinking fund would be used to do some of the projects in the School District's 10 year capital improvement plan.

Ebert says building and site sinking fund dollars can be used for the construction or repair of school buildings, improvements to school grounds, school security improvements and for the acquisition or upgrading of instructional technology. It can not be used for salaries, benefits, vehicles, uniforms, textbooks, curriculum, normal operations or routine maintenance.

If the request is approved, $1.75 of every $1,000 of taxable value would go to the school. A house with a taxable value of $50,000 would see an increase of $87.50 in taxes per year.
