(MARSHALL) – Investigators are confident the man killed in a shootout in January 2018 was responsible for the 2009 murder of a Coldwater man.
During a press conference Wednesday morning, First Lieutenant Charles Christensen of the Michigan State Police shared that they are highly confident 62 year old David Kidney of Union City murdered 62 year old Duane Finney on May 12, 2009.
Finney's vehicle was found in a field at 299 North Angola road in Coldwater Township just after 7 AM when a nearby homeowner saw the car and called 911. Finney had left his home at 4:30 AM to head to work in Litchfield. He was found in the driver's seat with a gunshot wound to the head.
Michigan State Police announced in March 2017 their Cold Case Team would be working with Branch County authorities to see if they could determine what happened. That investigation led them to execute a search warrant on January 23, 2018 at Kidney's home, located at 595 Francisco Road. Kidney fired at officers, striking two State Police Troopers. He was shot and killed by police.
Christensen says they found a Beretta hand gun and a Ruger pistol in a search of Kidney's home following the shooting. They matched bullets from the guns to ones recovered from Finney. Finney reported the guns missing from his home just a few months before he was shot.
Christensen says their investigation showed the two men had been neighbors at Fairview Estates and had some minor disputes and eventually stopped talking to each other before Kidney moved out.
Christensen says their theory is Kidney hid in Finney's car. When Finney left his home, Kidney forced him to drive to the area where he was eventually shot.
