Major Moves Committee Approves Three Funding Requests

(LAGRANGE) - It took LaGrange County’s Major Moves Committee barely two minutes to give its blessing to a $1.7 million dollar grant for sewers in the Howe area.

The grant would be part of a financing package to build a new sewage treatment plant along State Road 9 near County Road 700 North. The plant would serve the Toll Road Service Plaza, Cedar Lake, and south along State Road 9 to Howe.

If the financing is successful, construction could start one year from now with operations beginning in two years.

The recommendation goes before the LaGrange County Council next Monday, and then a joint meeting of the Council and Commissioners on Tuesday. It takes eight out of ten votes to approve a Major Moves expenditure.

Also Tuesday, the committee recommended up to $100,000 in Major Moves funding for the Mongo Fire Department and $57,580 for the Stroh Fire Department to purchase firefighter turnout gear. Mongo requested $143,100.

The committee took no action on the South Milford Community League’s request for $50,000 to replace a concession stand with a new building adding restrooms and storage for maintenance of the park. The committee suggested EDIT taxes might be a better fit for funding the project.
