Rural King Gives Locally 4-H'ers a Boost
Friday Jan 12, 2018 10:33am
Purdue Extension • Angola, IN

By: Tami Mosier, 4-H Extension Educator Steuben County

Rural King of Angola gave 18 youth a “boost” this winter with the “Rural King Gives a Boost” $100 gift card offer, managed by the Steuben County 4-H Program. Historically, Rural King has supported the Steuben County 4-H Auction where 4-H youth in grades 3-12 have the option to sell their market animals. Buyers knowingly and willingly pay above premium prices to support local youth in their pursuit of higher education, next year’s 4-H livestock project, their first car, or whatever the youth deem most necessary and responsible.

Since Rural King did not spend as much money as they typically do at the annual 4-H Auction, they decided to use their funds in a different manner. Steuben County 4-H youth submitted applications where they explained plans for their 2018 4-H year and listed all of the items they could purchase at Rural King in support of those plans if they were awarded a gift card.

While Rural King and many other businesses and individuals have donated to youth who show market animals in the 4-H Program, this was a unique way to expand the pool and support youth who exhibit breeding stock or no livestock at all. Non-livestock youth listed potential purchases such as sugar and canning jars to support their 4-H Foods project and dog food to support their 4-H Dog project, for example.
