Michigan's St. Joseph And Cass Counties Declared Disaster Areas

St. Joseph and Cass Counties in Michigan are part of 17 counties and two cities that have been declared disaster areas.

Governor Rick Snyder made the announcement Monday afternoon that 17 counties around west and central Michigan were designated as disaster areas following the heavy rainfall and snow melt from February 19 through the 21. Other area counties included on the list are Berrien and Kalamazoo along with the Cities of Grand Rapids and Lansing.

The counties completed damage assessments and submitted them to the State for review. By declaring a state of disaster, Synder has opened the Disaster and Emergency Contingency Fund to those counties and cities. That also means all state resources are available in cooperation with local response and recovery efforts in the disaster area.

Through the Disaster and Emergency Contingency Fund, local governments in the declared counties can apply for grants to receive reimbursement for response costs up to $100,000, or 10 percent of their previous year's operating budget, whichever is less.
