(THREE RIVERS) – The heavy rains from earlier this week have caused problems for an area river.
Three Rivers Fire Chief Carl Holcomb says the St. Joseph River is at a minor flood stage in the City. Current water height is at 7 feet, 6 inches. Forecasters are saying moderate flooding is expected to crest sometime Friday at 8 feet 7 inches.
Holcomb says citizens are urged to stay off the river as high water levels cause strong currents and make the water unsafe. Further rain could cause the waters to rise even higher than projected.
In addition, residents and businesses around the river are being asked to prepare for rising waters.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for the St. Joseph River in Mottville along with the river as it moves through Niles along with Elkhart and South Bend, Indiana.
