(CASSOPOLIS) – The rains from over the weekend have flooded several roads in Cass County.

Sheriff Richard Behnke says several complaints have come into his office about flash flooding and how the water is hindering travel. Many roads have been closed due to culvert failures.

Those roads include Oil City from Davis Lake Street to Ashton; Mt. Zion Road from Stewart to Calvin Center; Cassopolis Road from Crooked Creek to Osborn; Mason Street from Calvin Center to Tharp Lake and Bulhand Road from Lamb to Calvin Center, with just one lane closed.

In addition the following roads are also closed: Carter Lake Street from Birch to Baldwin Prairie; Wade Road from Chain Lake to Mt. Zion and McKenzie Street from Lawrence to Goff Lake.

With more rain forecast for later this week, Behnke says flooding
could continue, especially if rain totals are substantial. Motorists are urged to use caution during upcoming rain events and anticipate water over the roads in these areas.

Attempting to cross areas where water stands more than two inches deep or is running over the road can cause damage to the roadway due to washouts and sink holes in the gravel under the pavement.

Also, deep water can cause problems for vehicles. Behnke says several vehicle became stranded on roadways and motorists had to be rescued. If the water is moving too fast, tires won't make good contact with the roadways and could tip over.
