(STURGIS) – The City of Sturgis has approved a series of ordinances that would allow for medical marijuana based businesses to operate in the city limits.

The Commissioners were presented with the ordinances for a second reading during their meeting Wednesday night. At the August 22 meeting, the Commission approved ordinances that would allow for growers, processors, provisioning centers, secure transporters and safety compliance facilities in Sturgis.

The ordinances also called for one thousand foot buffer zones between these businesses and schools, churches and parks, along a buffer zone between the businesses and surrounding residential township areas.

Commissioner Jeff Mullins presented the motion to approve the ordinances, but included in his motion amending the size of the buffer zones to 250 feet. That was the original recommendation made by the Sturgis Planning Commission.

Before voting, City Clerk Ken Rhodes explained the motion to make sure the Commission understood what they were voting on. ...... {LISTEN}.

A roll call vote was then taken. ...... {LISTEN}.

The ordinances would go into effect on October 5. City Manager Mike Hughes asked that the Commission by consensus approve that no permits could be accepted by the City until November 1.

Hughes says that would give the City time to make sure they have everything in place for potential applicants. The Commissioner agreed.
