Albion, IN

ALBION – Noble County Prosecutor Eric Blackman today charged 42-year-old Trevor Wert of Albion with murder and child molesting in the of 2-and-a-half-year-old Railee Ewing.

9-1-1 received a call at 7:23 Thursday morning of an unresponsive child who was transported to Parkview Noble Hospital and pronounced dead about a half hour later.

Railee’s mother – Misty Matson – told officers Wert babysat Railee overnight, and that Wert told her the girl fell and hit her face against the bath tub.

Medical personnel noticed significant bruising and bleeding likely caused by sexual abuse. That prompted the activation of the Sexual Assault Response Team.

Wert was taken to the Noble County Jail for questioning and repeated his claim that the girl fell on the edge of the bathtub.

During a later interview, police claim Wert said Railee woke him after she had started running bath water. He said he became enraged and struck her several times and kicked her in the butt causing her to slam into the bathroom door frame. Wert said the girl became silent after the battering.

An initial hearing is planned for today in Noble Superior Court 1. Wert faces between 45 and 115 years if convicted.
