Wednesday, July 17, 2019

(COLDWATER) – A man has been arraigned after being arrested following a weekend police chase through two counties.

Branch County District Court officials say 36 year old Joseph Copas of Burlington is facing ten felony charges, including two counts of motor vehicle theft, along with assault and robbery charges.

Michigan State Police had been searching for Copas for the last two weeks regarding several felony warrants, but they were not able to locate him. Troopers were investigating a tip on Sunday when they spotted Copas in Calhoun County.

Officers pursued Copas into Branch County's Butler Township. He abandoned the vehicle he was driving in a tree line, and attempted to rob an elderly woman, demanding the keys to her vehicle. Copas then fled to another nearby residence and tried to steal a van that was parked in the driveway when he was confronted by troopers.

After a brief fight, Copas was arrested. Troopers determined the vehicle he was driving was stolen as well. Copas is being held without bond in the Branch County Jail.
