(LAGRANGE) - Employees at Dometic in LaGrange were told Wednesday they are losing their jobs when the company closes the plant in the next 60 days.
They learned the news during a plant-wide meeting Wednesday afternoon. It shocked many of the employees who said they had no idea of what was coming.
Some felt their jobs were being moved to Mexico. One told us that dies and other tools have been shipping to Mexico for awhile now.
RV Pro Magazine quoted Dometic North America President Scott Nelson as saying, “As part of our continuous strive to become more efficient, transferring our awnings production to our existing facility in Mexico will ensure that our manufacturing meets our customer’s requirements for lead time, quality and cost.”
Dometic is one of LaGrange’s largest employers with 197 workers affected. It ranks in the top ten of property tax payers in the Lakeland School Corporation district. They paid $80,419 in real estate and personal property taxes last year.
We reached out to the company headquarters in Elkhart. So far, Nelson has not returned our call.
The company filed a WARN notice with the Department of Workforce Development on Wednesday, listing a plant closure date of March 21st.
