Friday, February 21, 2020

(MENDON TOWNSHIP) – A traffic stop led to the recovery of several pieces of jewelry.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite says a deputy stopped a vehicle Wednesday for a non moving violation on M-60 near Haas Road in Mendon Township. During a search of the driver, the deputy discovered a concealed weapon.

While searching the vehicle, the officer found assorted jewelry, which the driver admitted to not owning. Among the pieces was a class ring from the early 1980's from a high school in the Battle Creek area.

The deputy was able to contact the ring's owner, who now lives in South Carolina. Arrangements have been made for her to retrieve her items, which were stolen several years ago from a home in Battle Creek. The owner shared that the found items had a significant sentimental value to her and her family.

Charges are being sought against the driver, a 28 year old Battle Creek woman. They include possession of a concealed weapon and possession of stolen property, which are both felonies in Michigan.
