(VOLINIA TOWNSHIP) – A one vehicle crash claimed the life of a Dowagiac man in Volinia Township.

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke says a vehicle was traveling east on Church Street, east of Lawrence Road at 6:18 Saturday morning. The driver, 21 year old Austin Price of Dowagiac, lost control of the automobile and it flipped into a tree.

Price and his two passengers were trapped in the vehicle. They were removed by the Dowagiac Fire Department, the Wayne Township Fire Department and the Marcellus Fire and Ambulance.

One of the passengers, 21 year old Michael Mortimore of Dowagiac, was pronounced dead at the scene. Price was flown to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Another passenger, 22 year old Nicholas Carey of Dowagiac, was taken by ambulance to Bronson Methodist Hospital.

Investigators say alcohol and drugs may have played a factor in the crash.

Also assisting at the scene was Pride Care Ambulance. The crash remains under investigation.
