(DETROIT) - Toward the end of May, the Detroit Pistons reopened their search for a general manager. On Thursday, they got their top candidate. The organization signed Troy Weaver, the longtime Oklahoma City Thunder front-office executive, to become its new general manager. Sources say the deal is for four years. L.A. Clippers assistant GM Mark Hughes and Brooklyn Nets assistant GM Jeff Peterson were also finalists for the position. Renowned around the league for his ability to identify and develop talent, Weaver was high on the Pistons’ list of candidates in 2018. However, the Thunder did not make Weaver available for an interview. That hurdle was cleared this month, paving a path for Weaver and Detroit. In a released statement, Weaver said it's an honor to join a franchise with the history and tradition of the Detroit Pistons. Weaver says he's excited for the challenge of building the team into a consistent winner and assembling the pieces to compete at a very high level. He says they will get to work right away, evaluating opportunities and installing systems that will make everyone successful. Weaver joined the Thunder in 2008 and was promoted to vice president of basketball operations in 2017. He has played a key role in maintaining OKC’s success during the past decade. After moving on from former franchise cornerstones Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson in February, the Pistons prioritized finding an experienced candidate who could immediately step in and help the organization navigate a rebuild. Weaver’s reputation for spotting talent in the NBA draft and facilitating an environment to help young players develop stands out. The Pistons will potentially have a top-five draft pick and more than $30 million in cap space, so Weaver will have ample opportunity to reshape the roster this offseason.
