(STURGIS) – Election Day is November 3, and Sturgis Director of Public Safety Ryan Banaszak wants to remind the community of election laws and
regulations.
Banaszak says COVID-19 has uniquely impacted all of us this year and the stressors associated with it, as well as the strong opinions and emotions of the election season, often times get the best of us.
Banaszak says we are fortunate to live in a country where our right to vote and our freedom to express our views and opinions are protected by our Constitution. Many times this is a right that we often take for granted, but one that defines our nation as a democracy.
With that in mind, Banaszak says there are some important reminders about Election Law we all need to remember. One is that the theft of a campaign sign is a misdemeanor which could result in a fine of up to $500 and 90 days in jail. Citizens should contact their local law enforcement agency and report any thefts. Also be aware of local ordinances regarding the placement of signs.
It is not permitted to solicit votes or engage in any type of campaigning within 100 feet of any doorway used by voters to enter the building in which a polling place is located. In addition, intimidation and/or harassment of voters is prohibited by law.
Pursuant to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Service's October 9 order, masks are not required in polling places, however they are encouraged to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
