(HOWE) – A man was killed in a one vehicle crash on the Indiana Toll Road.
The Indiana State Police were called at 6:40 Monday evening to a report of a semi crash near the eastbound 126.5 mile marker in LaGrange County. Toll Road maintenance personnel were the first on scene.
When troopers arrived, they found a single, semi-tractor trailer in the side ditch along the right shoulder. The driver, and sole occupant, was 53 year old Richard Shields of Marion, West Virginia. He was unresponsive, so troopers entered the cab to attempt medical assistance.
LaGrange County fire fighters and paramedics arrived and continued to administer CPR and even applied an AED, but were unsuccessful. Shields was pronounced dead at the scene by the LaGrange County Coroner's Office.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Shields was traveling east when for an unknown reason he ran off the roadway to the right, striking a guardrail and then coming to rest along the steep angle of the ditch. Troopers suspect Shields may have experienced a medical emergency, leading to the crash.
An autopsy has been scheduled.
