(DETROIT) – In addition to allowing Michigan restaurants to re-open for indoor dining, Governor Gretchen Whitmer also addressed winter sporting events.
During her media briefing Friday, Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced that under the new epidemic order, Winter contact sports, including boys and girls basketball, wrestling, ice hockey and competitive cheer, must remain non contact through February 21.
Under the previous order, which was set to expire on January 31, these sports would have been allowed to begin contact activities on February 1.
Michigan High School Athletic Association Executive Director Mark Uyl says they found out about this just like everyone else did during the Governor's briefing. He said they did not anticipate this delay, and the announcement has created many new questions. Uyl says they will address this as quickly as possible and hope to have a statement the first of the week.
Whitmer also announced Friday that under the new epidemic order, sports arenas with capacities of at least 10,000 spectators may allow up to 500 to attend events.
Uyl says that even with this information, no additional ticket would be sold for the Friday afternoon or Saturday 11 player State football finals. He says the MHSAA has been planning these finals for weeks and it's not a process they can adjust midstream.
