(CENTREVILLE) – A rape survivor will be telling her story at Glen Oaks Community College.
As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Liz Seccuro will be the featured speaker as part of the Viking Speaker Series, today in the Nora Hagen Theater.
The title of her talk is “Keeping Our Campus Safe For One And All”.
As a freshman at the University of Virginia in 1984, Seccuro was gang raped by several perpetrators at a fraternity house. She received little assistance from the university; ambivalent reactions from friends and family and a condescending rebuke from local law enforcement officials.
In turn, she returned to her life devoid of justice, vindication and support. She found in adulthood a propensity for alcoholism, promiscuity and self-abuse.
After years of struggling to reckon with her assault, Seccuro became a victims' rights advocate, helping others make peace and find justice in their own experiences with gender violence. She shared about that and receiving a letter from one of her rapists in her memoir, “Crash Into Me: A Survivor’s Search For Justice”.
The event starts at 12 PM and is free to the public. A limited number of her books will be at the event for sale, and Seccuro will be available following the talk for a book signing.
