Man's beating leads to four arrests near Shipshewana

SHIPSHEWANA – Two men who allegedly beat a third man at a residence near Shipshewana on Wednesday were arrested Friday following the service of a search warrant.

The LaGrange County Sheriff’s Office says Adolphus Powell of 10895 West County Road 590 North was attacked with a broken shovel handle and an axe handle during an argument over some stolen property.

Powell fled and was discovered by a passer-by on State Road 120 with multiple injuries that included a broken arm. He was treated at Parkview LaGrange Hospital.

Officers made several unsuccessful attempts to speak with people at the residence. They later applied for a search warrant which was served Friday morning.

The suspects in the beating were still there. 58-year-old Ricky Lee Stevens and 29-year-old Gregory Litterfield were arrested and charged with aggravated battery.

Officers also arrested 44-year-old Martha Powell on charges of possession of methamphetamine and maintaining a common nuisance. 43-year-old Travis Packer was charged with possession of methamphetamine and visiting a common nuisance. Clarence Egner was charged with visiting a common nuisance.
