(UNDATED) - A former multi-sport star in high school, and while in college, Drew Henson is going to be recognized for his baseball accolades this summer. The former University of Michigan quarterback is being enshrined in the Michigan Baseball Hall of Fame on Aug. 8, 2020, in Lansing. The ceremony will take place at Cooley Law School Stadium during the Lansing Lugnuts-West Michigan Whitecaps Single-A baseball game, with plans to stop the game after the second inning for video tributes and official plaque unveilings. Henson, who turned 40 in February, was a three-sport star at Brighton High School, where he set MHSAA records in base hits (257), doubles (68), home runs (70), grand slams (10), runs scored (250), RBIs (290) and walks drawn (129). Henson posted a .527 batting average and won 40 games as a pitcher in high school, then was a second-round pick of the New York Yankees in 1998. That’s when Henson arrived at Michigan, where he balanced a minor-league baseball career while playing quarterback on the football team. As quarterback, Henson appeared in 27 games from 1998 to 2000, throwing for 2,946 yards and 24 touchdowns (with just seven interceptions). His most productive season came in 2000, when Henson threw for more than 2,100 yards and 18 touchdowns while leading the Wolverines to a 9-3 record and win over Auburn in the Citrus Bowl. He went on to play a total of eight games in Major League Baseball, all for the Yankees, and was a sixth-round pick of the Houston Texans in the 2003 NFL Draft. Henson appeared in nine games in the NFL from 2004 to 2008, the last two with the Detroit Lions. Henson joins Bob Miller, a three-sport star at St. Mary’s of Redford High School and baseball star at the University of Detroit, before playing 10 seasons in Major League Baseball. He later coached Detroit for 36 seasons and is already a member of the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.
