(BURR OAK TOWNSHIP) - Four people were injured in a vehicle versus buggy collision that happened over the weekend.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Chad Spence says deputies were dispatched to Maystead Road near Needham Road in Burr Oak Township at 8:16 PM for an accident.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a vehicle traveling east on Maystead road struck the rear of an eastbound horse and buggy. All four occupants of the buggy were ejected.

Three of the four occupants of the buggy sustained serious injuries and were transported by helicopters to area hospitals. One of the individuals injured was a pregnant woman who remains in critical condition. Two young children involved in the crash are in stable condition.

Spence says investigators believe that drug use may have been a contributing factor in the crash. The driver of the vehicle, a 54 year old man, was arrested at the scene and lodged at the St. Joseph County Jail, pending further investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Burr Oak and Colon Fire Departments, Michigan State Police, Life Care Ambulance, Med Flight and Samaritan Helicopter.

The crash remains under investigation.
