(STURGIS) - The Sturgis District Library is asking for a renewal of their millage during Tuesday's Primary Election.
Library Director Todd Reed says the District Library was created in May 2006 after the City of Sturgis, Fawn River, Sherman, and Sturgis Townships approved a district library agreement. The District Library serves 18,000 people.
The Sturgis District Library is considered a Class 4 Library because it serves between 12,500 and 25,000 people.
Reed says he looked at the numbers of the Sturgis District Library compared to other Class 4 libraries. He says Sturgis is requesting 8% less than average in their millage for libraries their size. Sturgis is also getting 21% less per capita income than average, and the full-time equivalent employment is 13% less than average. (LISTEN ABOVE).
Reed says the events, activities and programs that the Sturgis District Library put on has 38% more attendance than average for their class size.
The millage is asking for 1.0548 mills for ten years. That's less than the last renewal request.
Polls will be open Tuesday until 8 PM.
