(LANSING) - Michigan's minimum wage will be going up starting January 1.

The State's standard minimum wage will increase from $12.48 per hour to $13.73 an hour in the new year. This is the first step in moving the standard minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2027.

Any non-exempt employees must still be paid 1.5 times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a week.

In addition, under the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act, tipped employee wage will be $5.49 per hour which is 40% of the standard minimum wage. If the tipped worker's base pay plus tips do not equal at least the standard minimum wage, the employer must pay the difference.

Minimum wage for minors, which are people ages 16 and 17 will be $11.67 per hour, which is set at 85% of the standard minimum wage. And the training wage for anyone under the age of 20, will be $4.25 per hour for the first 90 days of employment.

Any future increases in the standard minimum wage will be tied to the inflation rate starting in 2028 and beyond.
