(LANSING) – The Michigan House Of Representatives on Thursday voted in favor of a record high investment in Michigan students as part of its budget plan.
State Representative Aaron Miller of Sturgis, who serves as the Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee On School Aid, says a budget like this has never been seen in the way it funds education. LINKC.
Miller says this budget will put the money right where it is needed the most. LINKD.
The $15.2 billion commitment will increase the per pupil funding from $120 per student to $240 per student. That's a total increase of more than $300 million in the foundation allowance. It also increases Career Technical Education funding to $50 per student and includes $16 million in equipment grants for a total of nearly $74 million in CTE investment.
The budget would also include a total investment of $510 million in at risk students; along with nearly tripling funding for English language learners. In addition it would provide $7 million for isolated school district funding and includes a tiered formula to allow for a wider distribution of funds to students in rural districts.
The budget would also include additional investments in school safety grants and school based health and mental health programs.
Miller says the budget, which won bipartisan support in the Michigan House, will be sent to Governor Gretchen Whitmer for consideration.
