Saturday, January 25, 2020

(BRANCH COUNTY) – The victim of a scam was able to get her money back.

Michigan State Police were called to investigate an attempted
fraud incident involving a senior citizen in Branch County. The woman said she was contacted by an individual she believed to be her grandson, who stated he was in court for an at fault crash, and needed $15,000 in order to be released.

The victim went to her bank, withdrew the money, put it in a box and sent it by way of Federal Express to an address given to her by the caller. Later that evening, the victim started to have second thoughts and called the State Police.

After listening to her story, troopers contacted Federal Express officials, who assisted in diverting the package from delivery. Troopers also called police in the receiving town, who were able to intercept the package and returned it to the victim.

Troopers want to warn citizens to always be skeptical of solicitations that come over the phone.
