(COLDWATER) – A traffic stop on the east side of Coldwater led to the arrest of an individual.
Michigan State Police were on patrol June 1 on U.S. 12 near Fiske Road and stopped a vehicle pulling a trailer for an equipment violation. Troopers discovered the vehicle, a 2004 Dodge Durango, had been reported stolen from Steuben County, Indiana. The vehicle also had an improper plate.
The driver, a 39 year old Union City man, and the passenger, a 36 year old Coldwater woman, were detained during the investigation. Troopers found out the trailer did not have a valid registration and the VIN number had been intentionally covered up with paint.
Troopers also found there was suspected methamphetamine inside the Durango, along with keys for other vehicles and titles for vehicles not in the names of the driver or the passenger. One of the titles came back to a reported stolen vehicle from Emmett Township in 2020.
Inside the Durango, troopers found numerous items suspected to be stolen, including power and hand tools, scrap metal, Suzuki motorcycle parts, vehicle speakers and an amplifier, and a pair of night vision goggles.
The driver was arrested and taken to the Branch County Jail. The passenger was released at the scene.
The Michigan State Police Auto Theft Unit is assisting with the investigation. The Steuben County Sheriff's Department and the Emmett Township Police Department have been contacted.
