(ANGOLA) – An investigation into allegations of child abuse led to the arrest of two people.
The Steuben County Sheriff's Office says they were notified Friday by officials at Cameron Hospital about an injured three year old child. In a media release, deputies say that medical personnel told them that the injuries were not consistent with the information provided by the child's father, 31 year old Derek Pierce of Kendallville, or his girlfriend, 25 year old Dakota McHenry of Fort Wayne.
As the investigation continued, deputies determined that the child was injured at the HI-VUE Campground near Lake Gage in Steuben County.
McHenry was arrested on charges of neglect of a dependent causing serious bodily injury, domestic battery to a child less than 14 years old causing serious bodily injury, and obstruction of justice.
Pierce was arrested for obstruction of justice and neglect of a dependent causing serious bodily injury.
The child was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne and is listed in critically unstable condition.
Authorities say they are continuing to investigate the situation.
