(WHITE PIGEON) – A recommendation has been made to tear down a building in White Pigeon that is 165 years old.
According to WWMT TV, the White Pigeon Village Council met Tuesday in a special meeting to hear a report on a three story building that has been the home to the Tasty Nut Shop and Soda Bar for 101 years. The building was constructed before the Civil War. But Mike Wilson, an engineer with Jones Petrie Rafinski Corporation of South Bend, recommends the building be torn down because of a danger of collapse.
In the over 70 page report presented to the Village Council, Wilson says the building is irreparable throughout the entire structure. He also recommended that the building should be thoroughly documented to preserve its history record to be kept available to the public. He even suggested the possible planning and constructing of a historical exhibit at the site.
White Pigeon Zoning Administrator Douglas Kuhlman sent a letter to the owner of the Tasty Nut Shop in October that stated the village received complaints about the condition of the building. Wilson reported that village officials told him bricks were falling off the building.
The White Pigeon Village Council did not take any action. They will meet with their lawyers to determine what the next steps should be.
