(UNDATED) – Police departments across Southern Michigan have been investigating fraud complaints.
According to the Michigan State Police, many of the victims say they received a call, where an individual tells them that a family member has been taken into police custody, or a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The caller then will come to the victim's house to collect cash, have the victim purchase gift cards; or they will request a deposit into a crypto coin account.
In some cases, the suspect has even provided a copy of a fake arrest warrant either by e-mail or by text message.
Michigan State Police say that police officials will never ask anyone to pay a bond or take money about a case without first presenting a valid police identification. In addition, police will never send a courier to collect money from anyone.
If you question the identity of someone who comes to your house or business and claims to be a police officer, Michigan State Police say to treat the person with respect, and call 911 or the department the person says they are from to verify their identity.
Michigan State Police say they arrested two people in Lenawee County in connection with a couple of complaints. In addition, other suspects have been known to make phone calls, using software to scramble numbers to make it appear to be from a police agency.
If you have been a victim of this kind of fraud, or have information on the suspects involved in this crime, please call your local police department.
