(CASSOPOLIS) – A Marcellus area man has been found guilty of crimes against his daughter.
Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz says a Circuit Court Jury Friday morning found Jason Fedewa guilty on three counts of First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, involving sexual penetration of a person under the age of 13. He was also found guilty of three counts of Second Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, involving sexual contact of a person under the age of 13.
The jury heard testimony from the victim, who lived in a closed, quasi-communal family where she was groomed by her father into believing that all parents have sex with their children. The victim described multiple incidents in which she was raped and abused before she was removed from her parents at the age of 13.
In addition to hearing from multiple experts on child abuse, pediatrics and trauma, the jury also heard from the victim’s mother, Sara Fedewa. She testified that she still does not believe her daughter, despite her finding her husband’s journals in which he repeatedly made entries about forcing his daughter to sleep in their bed and his wanting to commit suicide when he didn’t get what he wanted from his daughter.
The victim’s grandmother and brother testified. The older brother testified that when the victim said that their dad had told her she was no longer a virgin, he instantly knew what his father had done to his sister.
Fitz says this verdict has stopped a great evil and changed the victim’s life in a critically important way.
Fedewa is scheduled for sentencing on August 12. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, including a mandatory minimum 25 years without the possibility of parole.
