ELKHART COUNTY – According to the Elkhart Police Department suspect Lincoln Leuchtner had only been out of prison for one week before he attacked a Walmart employee at the Walmart off of County Road 6 in Ekhart County.
The incident occurred just after 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 2.
The Walmart employee was identified as Phillip Ross and was discovered by police with a wound to the back of his head.
Ross said as he was walking back into the store from his vehicle when he was approached by Leuchtner and attacked.
Authorities said Leuchtner was let out of prison on July 28 on parole for an armed robbery.
Leuchtner fled the scene but was later caught after bystanders provided authorities with his backpack containing his birth certificate.
The machete was found under a parked car in the Walmart parking lot.
