(TOPEKA) – A LaGrange County community has received funding to help build a housing development.
The Town of Topeka has announced that they have received $3 million from a Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative grant. The money is slated to be used to help with the construction of a 151 unit housing development on the north side of Topeka. The cost of the project is $28 million.
Town officials say the grant money will be used to aid in constructing some of the infrastructure for the housing development, specifically for sewer lines, roads, water supply lines and curbing.
By receiving and using grants to help with the construct of the development, it will help keep the overall cost down for the homes.
Topeka bought just over 51 acres at a cost of $1.29 million for the development. The land is located northeast of North Main Street and East Lake Street. Those looking to purchase homes will have options to choose from, such as cottage homes, family homes, pocket neighborhoods and duplex villas. It’s estimated that the new homes will range anywhere from $250,000 to $300,000.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held either late in the winter or early in the Spring of 2023. The plan is to have the first home in the development completed by next summer.
