(ALBION) – A Noble County man has plead guilty to attempted murder in an incident that happened in April 2021.
Noble County Circuit Court officials say 41 year old Justin Weikel of LaOtto entered the plea Monday. It will be taken under advisement and if accepted, Weikel would be sentenced on March 14. The plea calls for him to spend no more than 35 years in prison.
At 11:30 PM on April 21, 2021, Fort Wayne Police attempted to pull over a vehicle for a traffic violation. Weikel stopped the vehicle, then drove away as police approached it.
Police pursued Weikel, and the chase went into DeKalb County, then continued into Noble County. Officers put down stop sticks and Weikel’s vehicle eventually came to a stop at the Johnson Mobile Home Park in Kendallville just after 12 AM.
Court officials say Weikel refused to comply with officers, who then fired bean bag rounds to knock out the back window of the vehicle. Officers approached the vehicle, and then three shots were fired, causing the officers to fall back.
The stand off continued for about an hour before officers moved on the car and removed Weikel.
A search of the vehicle located a 9mm handgun, empty bullet casings and more ammunition. Officers also found a plastic bag with a white substance. It field tested positive for heroin.
Weikel is also facing drug and weapon charges in Steuben County.
