(UNDATED) – Indiana Michigan Power is looking at Elkhart County as the home of one of their four proposed solar power plants.
Company officials say they are planning to build four new solar plants as a way to significantly expand the volume of clean energy that powers the homes and businesses of their customers. I&M has filed plans with Indiana and Michigan state authorities for the proposed solar power plants.
Indiana Michigan Power says when it’s completed, more than 30,000 Elkhart County homes and businesses could receive their power from the sun.
Each of the four solar power plants will be built by private developers. Indiana Michigan Power will invest approximately $1 billion in the Lake Trout and Mayapple, Indiana facilities, which they will own and operate. They will purchase the power generated from the independently operated Elkhart County and Sculpin plants.
The four locations were chosen from among 32 proposals submitted to Indiana Michigan in response to a competitive 2022 Request For Proposals process.
The four solar power plants are expected to be placed in-service delivering energy to customers over a period from late 2025 to mid-2026.
