(ORLAND) – A Coldwater man has been arrested in connection with a two vehicle crash that injured another individual.

Steuben County Chief Deputy Sheriff Mark Meeks says his department was called out around 6:30 PM Sunday for a two vehicle crash in the area of State Road 327 and County Road 650 North. When they arrived, deputies found two vehicles facing each other on the west side of the road.

The investigation determined that 34 year old Charles Beeman of Coldwater was driving a pick up north on State Road 327, and pulling a construction trailer. As he approached the intersection of County Road 650 North, Beeman decided to pass two other vehicles that were in front of him. One of the vehicles being passed was driven by 68 year Paul Pence of Orland, who started to make a left hand turn, and was struck by Beeman’s pick up.

Pence was trapped in his truck, and had to be removed by the Orland Fire Department and Steuben County EMS. He was then flown by Samaritan Helicopter to a Fort Wayne Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

Beeman was taken into custody and transported to the Steuben County Jail. He is being held on felony charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction. He is also being held on misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person.

Beeman’s bond was set at $5,000.
