(UNDATED) – Storms moved through St. Joseph County late Tuesday afternoon, with two reported tornadoes in Centreville and in Colon.
St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman and St. Joseph County Emergency Management Director Erin Goff are reporting there was significant tornado damage to multiple locations in St. Joseph County, including the central, north central, and northeastern sections of the county. There have been two reported non-life threatening injuries associated with the tornado activity.
Bingaman and Goff say numerous homes and businesses have sustained damage. Utility providers, public works personnel, law enforcement, fire, and EMS are all working to ensure life safety issues are handled. Preliminary damage assessments are underway.
County Commission Chairperson Ken Malone has declared a local state of emergency, indicating local resources are being utilized to the fullest possible extent and that response and recovery elements of the County’s emergency operations plan have been activated.
The National Weather Service will be in St. Joseph County in the coming days to determine the specifics of the tornado activity.
Bingaman and Goff want to remind all St. Joseph County residents who may be running a generator during the time of power loss to run it outdoors in a well-ventilated area and generators should never be run in a garage, basement, or other indoor location.
