Downtown Sturgis Lighting Project Moving Forward
Tuesday, May 14, 2024

(STURGIS) – A long time plan for downtown Sturgis is taking a step closer to being a reality.

During last week’s City Commission meeting, Community Development Specialist Jeff Coney presented an update on a project to light the downtown area. The Downtown Development Authority has been investigating this idea to install over 2,900 lineal feet of LED lighting to accentuate the downtown Sturgis skyline along Chicago Road.

Coney says several other elements are included in the proposed project, such as a new food truck hub just south of the Sturges-Young Center For The Arts; the creation of the Electric Alley behind Five Lakes Coffee; and a DDA website that would include QR codes that will be located at all public art and historical sites throughout the downtown.

Coney says the DDA has been working to get the funding for this project. LINKC.

Coney says the City is not being asked to provide any funding for the project. He did say the DDA would need the City to provide permission for the use of the alley way and parking lot for the food hub.
