(UNDATED) – Ten millage proposals were on Tuesday’s Primary Election ballot for St. Joseph County voters.
Nine of them passed, with just one being defeated.
The one that was defeated was a proposal from Sturgis Public Schools, who was asking for a millage for up to 3 mills a year until 2034 that would allow them to collect the 18 mills on non homestead properties they are supposed to get under Michigan law. It was defeated with 1,409 No votes (51.9%) to 1,301 Yes votes (48%).
Centreville Schools was asking for a renewal of their operating millage. It passed 828 Yes votes (62.4%) to 499 No votes (37.6%).
The St. Joseph County Road Commission Millage, asking for 1 mill for ten years, was renewed with 7,310 Yes votes (63.2%) to 4,243 No votes (36.7%). Also being renewed was the St. Joseph County Commission On Aging Millage, which is for three-quarters of a mill. That passed 8,259 Yes votes (71.4%) to 3,306 No votes (28.5%).
The Colon Township Library Millage proposal, asking for .8826 mills over five years, passed 502 (69%) to 225 (30.9%). The White Pigeon Township Library millage renewal passed 585 Yes votes (68.3%) to 271 No votes (31.6%).
Voters in Fawn River Township approved a fire protection and ambulance special assessment proposal with 201 Yes votes (59.6%) to 136 No votes (40.3%). Leonidas Township residents voted in favor of a fire and ambulance service millage 155 Yes votes (69.5%) to 68 No votes (30.5%).
In Mottville Township, a road improvement millage was approved 128 Yes votes (52%) to 118 No votes (47.9%).
Both Sherman Township and Sturgis Township residents were presented with fire protection and ambulance special assessment proposals, and both passed. In Sherman Township, the measure was approved with 554 Yes votes (58%) to 401 No votes (41.9%). In Sturgis Township, that proposal was passed with 221 Yes votes (62%) to 135 No votes (37.9%).
