(ANGOLA) – Work is going to be done to Steuben County courtrooms at a cost of $351,584.
During Tuesday’s meeting, the Steuben County Commission voted 2-1 to approve a change order that would allow changes to be done to the jury boxes and judge’s benches, after court staff discovered design issues in the new $26 million Judicial Center that was opened for business this past summer.
The work will be one in the Superior, Circuit and Magistrate Courtrooms, which are operational. It should take approximately four months to get the projects finished. County officials say Weigand Construction will be doing the work.
One of the main issues was that the witness stands were built too close to the table where the defendants will be sitting.
Another issues is that the front row of jurors have trouble seeing over the front wall of the juror’s box to view the courtroom.
Officials says that a fourth courtroom, which was constructed to help with the eventual establishing of a second Superior Court will not be done at this time.
According to county officials, around half of the cost of the repairs will be for labor, which will be paid to Weigand. If there are any labor cost overruns, then Weigand will take care of them. Material overruns are not expected to be a problem.
