(STURGIS) – Sturgis Public Schools is looking at doing safety updates around the District.
Monday night, Sturgis Superintendent Dr. Art Ebert shared with the Board of Education some safety recommendations for the different school buildings. Ebert explains that the recommendations came from a meeting of the Security Committee who reviewed what is currently in place and then brainstormed possible enhancements.
The recommendations from the Security Committee then went to the Facilities Committee who reviewed and prioritized them, based on the available funding, and brought that list to the Board for review.
The first item that Ebert says the Schools would like to prioritize is secured vestibules at all of the school buildings similar to what is at Wenzel School, where you are let into the building through a set of doors, and if you need to drop something off it would go through a window. If you were to be a guest, then you would be let through a second set of doors.
Ebert says the first vestibule project would be at Sturgis High School. LINKC.
The cost for this project would be approximately $200,000.
Some of the other projects include adding security cameras through the District; adding security doors at Sturgis Central Commons; securing the Wall School west side playground and Safety Town; installing another badge reader and purchasing a mobile metal detector to be used for larger events.
The Board of Education will vote on these recommendations during their November 11 meeting.
