(STURGIS) – No winner has yet to be declared for a Second Precinct seat on the Sturgis City Commission.
The St. Joseph County Board of Canvassers are continuing to count the ballots, after no candidates appeared on the ballot for the seat. Incumbent City Commissioner Emmanuel Nieves and Roger Moyer were Write In candidates for the position, and there were 117 votes cast for write ins.
Election Specialist Abby Fader with the St. Joseph County Clerk’s Office says the Canvassers have to look at every ballot cast in the Second Precinct to verify them before an announcement can be made. Certification of the ballots won’t be made official until November 12.
Sturgis City Clerk Ken Rhodes says that is due to the change in election law that allows overseas ballots to be sent back within six days after the election. Under normal circumstances that would be Monday, November 11. But with that being Veteran’s Day, the Board of Canvassers won’t be able to finish up until Tuesday, November 12.
