(LANSING) – Extremely cold weather is coming to Southern Michigan and Northern Indiana starting this weekend.
The Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division is urging residents and visitors to the States to take precautions and to stay safe.
Captain Kevin Sweeney, Deputy State Director of Michigan Emergency Management says with temperatures only forecast to be in the low single digits early next week, and lows dropping below zero and with dangerously cold wind chills, it’s important to take extra steps to keep yourself and loved ones safe.
The National Weather Service is forecasting that air temperatures and wind chills will drop below zero on Monday and Tuesday. These extreme conditions increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia within minutes.
To stay safe in this extreme cold, Sweeney says to limit your time outdoors. If you must go outside, wear several layers of warm clothing and watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite symptoms include numbness, loss of feeling, and pale or waxy skin especially on the face, fingers and toes. Hypothermia symptoms are shivering, exhaustion, confusion, slurred speech or drowsiness.
Avoid overexertion, such as shoveling snow or other activities that can put a strain on your heart. Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning but only using generators and grills outdoors. Never use a gas stove top or oven to heat your home.
Prepare for travel emergencies. Make sure your gas tank is full and your vehicle is stocked with an emergency kit which includes warm clothing, blankets, gloves, hats and a phone charger. If you become stranded, stay with your vehicle and wait for help.
Check on others. Older adults, young children and pets are especially vulnerable to extreme cold and should be checked on regularly.
