(UNDATED) - Michigan Law Enforcement agencies are part of a statewide enforcement campaign during the month of March.

Local and State agencies are participating in the "Move Over or Get Pulled Over" campaign as a way to protect first responders, maintenance crews working along busy roadways and tow truck operators.

Motorists are reminded that by law, they are required to slow down to at least 10 MPH below the posted speed limit. If it's safe to do so, they must move over at least one lane when approaching any stationary vehicle with flashing, rotating, or oscillating lights.

During this enforcement period, law enforcement officers are going to be monitoring specifically for violators to prevent the rising number of roadside injuries and fatalities.

Michigan State Police say that failure to comply with the Move Over Or Get Pulled Over campaign can result in a civil infraction carrying a $400 fine and two points on a driver's license.

In the case of more severe incidents where a violation causes injury or death to a responder, motorists can face felony charges and up to 15 years in prison.

Law enforcement officers are urging all drivers to stay alert and give emergency workers the space they need to return home safely.
