(COLDWATER) - A man familiar with the court system wants to serve in a new role.

On Monday, Branch County Prosecutor Zachary Stempien announced that he is seeking election to be the next Circuit Court Judge for the County, to fill the upcoming vacancy of Judge William O'Grady. Stempien says this decision comes after deep reflection and consideration of his professional experience, longstanding service to the Branch County Community, lifelong commitment to the community and his commitment to maintaining the safety of the community while ensuring fair, impartial and accessible justice to all.

Stempien says over the course of his career, he has gained extensive experience in both courtroom practice and the administration of justice. As the Branch County Prosecuting Attorney, he has successfully litigated cases at every level of the judicial system, including in the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Michigan Supreme Court.

Stempien says his commitment to the Branch County community is life-long and deeply personal. He says he is dedicated to fostering public trust in the judiciary.

Judge William O'Grady announced over the weekend his resignation as Branch County Circuit Court Judge effective January 1, 2026. He will be pursuing a new government position and be moving to the Detroit area to be closer to his family.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer will appoint an interim judge to fill the position until the November 2026 election.
